Social Media- Digg.com

digg1

Digg has been around since November of 2004. It’s a great social news site which makes it better in my opinion than just the usual social sites. It can to give you a lot of unique visitors every single day.
What are the benefits of using Digg? For casual users, Digg is a goldmine of great stories, hard to find tutorials, practical tips, you name it. From Technology to Sports, there’s a plethora of categories to choose from. For website owners or bloggers, Digg can be your new best friend. Stories that are submitted to Digg and actually make it to the front page can cause what has become known as the “Digg Effect”, a huge influx of traffic from Digg to your site or blog. It’s a great way to invite more people to your spot on the Web.
Here’s the short version of how Digg works, from the About Digg page:
“Well, everything on digg is submitted by the digg user community (that would be you). After you submit content, other digg users read your submission and digg what they like best. If your story rocks and receives enough diggs, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of digg visitors to see.”
First, you need to register- it’s fast and free. Then you’ll be able to start Digging, or submitting, stories that you find on the Web to Digg.
There are two ways to submit stories to Digg:

•    Submit a story: If you find something you’d like to share with the Digg community, you can navigate to the Submit a Story URL and go through the process. One tip: if you want your story to get Dugg (lots of other people looking at it), write a really good description and title. Otherwise, people won’t be interested in clicking through.

•    Use a bookmarklet: There are quite a few handy bookmarklets that you can use to submit a story to Digg; I use this Digg Bookmarklet . Just drag that link to your browser toolbar (works with Internet Explorer and Firefox) and you’re all set.
Most importantly you have to understand the game. You want to be digged but you have to return the favor. Stay on top of your shouts from other diggers and Digg their stories. If the article is about a topic that I don’t agree with I then I make the decision of either digging but making a comment on my point of view or if it’s something I’m really uncomfortable digging, then I leave it as is. I don’t like to “bury” my friends. A great technique I’ve learnt is to Digg stories that still don’t have many diggs yet, this is a great opportunity for your friend to see that you’re one of the only friends that have digged them, and they will remember that. If you want to go above and beyond, share that story for them and I’m positive when you need diggs, they’ll be there for you. I believe these are the very diggers that have catapulted me to the front page.
Therefore, many diggers ask you to “Digg and share” I like to share my mutual friend’s stories unexpectedly. This is a nice surprise to them and before you know it, they are doing the same for you. However, I make sure that the story interests me, I refuse to Digg everything, as this must be a personal experience. Another thing is leaving comments on stories. Your friends want you to Digg their stories, but they want to see feedback. This also makes you visible to other diggers, and they will come on to your page and see your stories, possibly Digg them, and add you as a friend.
The stories themselves have to be interesting. Set alerts for breaking news and be the first to submit your story. Once you have built a following you can submit personal blogs and articles that link to a website you want to promote. Now you can begin to use Digg as a major traffic tool. This will increase page views and familiarize tons of new users with a site they have never seen before. This is a huge plus for you and your clients.
Good luck, and hope to Digg you soon.
